What is Propane?

Propane is a hydrocarbon and is commonly referred to as Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG.  At atmospheric pressures, LPG exists as a gas.  Increasing the pressure on the LPG will cause the gas to condense and liquefy.  Propane is kept under moderate pressure and is stored and transported as a compressed liquid.  Propane is colorless and odorless.  As a safety measure, an odorant is added to propane to help detect any propane leaks.  The odorant is called Ethyl Mercaptan, a sulphur-based compound smells like boiling cabbage or rotten eggs.

Propane is commonly used for residential heating, cooking, generators, torches, barbecues, portable stoves and space and water heaters. It is also a fuel for engine applications such as forklifts, farm irrigation pumps, fleet vehicles, and buses. It’s applications are rapidly growing due to new technology developments.

What to do if you smell propane in or around your home?

• No Flames or Sparks! Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames.  Avoid the use of anything that can create a spark, this includes lighters, open flames, mechanical devices such as light switches, thermostats and Phones or Cell phones
• Leave the Area – Get everyone out of the building or leave the area
• Shut off propane – Turn the hand wheel clockwise (to the right) as far as possible
  • Meter – Turn valve a quarter of the way in either direction so that the lever is perpendicular to the pipe
  • Tank or Cylinder – Turn the hand wheel clockwise (to the right) as far as possible
  • Propane Appliance – Close the shut-off valve
• Report the leak! From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call 911 or your local fire department
• Do not return to the building or area until your emergency responder determines that it is safe to do so
• Get your system checked! Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, contact your local branch to arrange a check of your entire system to ensure it is leak free

Storage and Handling of Propane Tanks & Cylinders

Propane Tanks and Cylinders should always be stored in an upright position in a well-ventilated area. Never store propane in your home, your car, or your garage.  CanGas Propane delivery drivers regularly update their training and certifications so that CanGas Propane meets or exceeds all government regulations and industry guidelines.

Winter or Summer Cottages 

Once a year you should have your propane system inspected and tested for leaks and regular maintenance should be performed on propane appliances. Inspect chimneys, flue pipes and vents for damage, debris, and blockage as animals may build a home in them over the time you are away. Before leaving your cottage, turn off the supply valve of the tank to ensure that you are leaving the system off and safe.

Delivery Tips

• Keep the path Clear – Continued maintenance to ensure the path to your tank is clear of snow, brush and debris. Keep all appliance vents, and intakes clear of obstructions, especially snow and ice in the winter heating season
• Snow/Ice – Use caution when removing snow from around tanks or cylinders, propane lines, regulators or appliance vents. Clear heavy snow until the tank and equipment are visible and avoid sharp tools or force.  Use a soft broom or brush to ensure no damage is done to the equipment or components
• Mark your Driveway – Mark the path with stakes to help the driver stay on the prepared surface.
